Overview
Hazardous waste is waste that is dangerous or potentially harmful to our health or the environment. The wastes can be liquid, solid, gas, or sludge. Examples of potential hazardous wastes
are discarded commercial products, like cleaning fluids or pesticides, or the by-products of manufacturing processes.
The Division of Water and Waste Management's Hazardous Waste Management Program has the primary responsibility of regulating the management of hazardous waste within the state. This
responsibility includes monitoring facilities that generate, treat, store or dispose of hazardous waste for compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements. The program requires
permits for certain hazardous waste activities and provides financial assurance to ensure permitted hazardous waste management facilities have adequate financial resources to cover both sudden
accidental liability and the long term costs of facility closure. Also, the program conducts technical inspections, investigations and samplings that can support complicated case development
as needed to protect human health and the environment. Compliance assistance is offered to hazardous waste generating facilities to help those individuals to understand and comply with state
and federal regulatory requirements and to save money through waste minimization.
